a bird's life: life lately

My birthday week has almost come to an end. But what a great week it's been. Chris and the kids have treated me like royalty. I haven't had to make dinner, clean, make coffee, or really do any hard labor all week. Plus each night I have been showered with desserts, gifts, and so much love.
Here's a few snaps from this week.

A gift from Chris. I saw this at Carver Junk Company a few weeks ago and had to have it. Chris blew me off with "it's too expensive, yadda yadda yadda." And then he went back and bought it for me.

This was the first gift after my birthday that the kids gave me. I had no idea at this point I was getting a gift every day. They spoil me.

If you haven't been to Minnesota in the winter, I completely understand why. But if you're here, check this out. The beauty of a frozen waterfall almost makes up for polar vortex temperatures.

My actual birthday was spent watching the Oscars in bed with a glass of wine.

Yet another gift (I told you, I'm spoiled)...ethically found antlers. In love.

You can't go wring with red velvet cupcakes (in bed) at 7 in the morning, right?

And it was too large to upload, but this was maybe my favorite gift of all. Henry has been teaching himself to play Happy Birthday on the trumpet for me. This was him on Monday. It melts my heart.

Thank you all for your own birthday wishes. It's so nice to have so many friend near and far, met and not yet met. I am thankful for all of you.

Happy weekend!

outfit of the day(bird): DMV

jeans, booties ~ Target
sweatshirt ~ H&M via Goodwill
sunglasses ~ thrifted

I renewed my driver's license yesterday. I was so proud of myself for waking up early enough to curl my hair and put some makeup on. I even threw some lipstick on before I left for work. Here's the problem....Chris has been treating me like a queen my whole birthday week. (Huge problem, right?) Part of that royal treatment was him stopping at the most delicious cafe on the way to work to pick us up some quiche. My choice? spinach and ricotta. I got to work, gobbled it down, and walked over to the county center to get my new license. Normally the lines are monstrous, so I allowed myself time while waiting to reapply my lipstick and check for general problems that might show up in the ID I will be using for the next four years (not that anyone cards me anymore). But when I arrived at the DMV, there was no one in line. I received my number and had it called before I could even sit down and use my phone as a mirror. So when the woman swept me over to get my picture taken, I smiled and hoped for the best. I will tell you in 8-10 days if there was spinach between my teeth.

bird seed: scrambled egg muffins

I thought I'd share a new favorite breakfast recipe around here: scrambled egg muffins! We love them because they are super easy, healthy, and quite good! Mimi really loves helping to mix them up, too. It's always fun when the kids can help! This recipe will makes about six muffins, but feel free to adjust to your needs. You can really add whatever veggies, meats, and cheeses you happen to have in the fridge, but here's what we used:

6 large eggs
1/2 cup fresh spinach, chopped
3/4 cup vegan sausage, cooked, cooled, and chopped (or real sausage, if that's your thing!)
1/4 cup milk
1/2 cup shredded cheese (I used a cheddar and jack mix)
1/4 tsp garlic powder
salt and pepper, to taste

1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Spray 6 muffin cups with a nonstick spray.
2. Whisk the eggs and milk together. Add the spinach, cooled sausage, the spices, half the cheese, and mix.
3. Scoop mixture into prepared muffin tin. Fill each cup just about to the top. Sprinkle the remaining cheese equally atop each muffin.
4. Bake for 25 minutes, or until the muffins are set and cooked through.
5. Serve and enjoy!

I like mine with a side of avocado and smothered in hot sauce! Bon app├ętit!

What's your favorite breakfast food?

outfit of the day(bird): it's really real

blazer~ b. (a resale shop)
shirt~ H&M
jeans~ Levis
hat~ TJ Maxx
boots~ DSW

Thanks to all of the good housing vibes you sent my way, we got the house in California! We now have an address in California. It suddenly makes everything seem so real! Also, way more scary. But I am getting a bit more excited. I love the house. I am excited to get there and get settled and get started decorating. We have fruit trees in our yard. Orange, apple, lemon, peach, and plum trees (Toto, I don't think we are in Minnesota anymore)! We are in a good school district, which is awesome since Mimi will start kindergarten in the fall. Jim will be biking distance from his office, which he is very excited about. Both the preschool where we hope to send Ben and the gym I hope to join are nearby, as well. Things are starting to fall into place. It's really real. We have set a moving date and, of course, have a ton to do before then. I am anxious and haven't slept well lately, thinking about all that has to be done and all the people I want to see and things I want to do before we leave. But the good news is that I have started to feel a glimmer of excitement, something that I have not really felt, or at least haven't really let myself feel, until now. Let the adventure begin!

Things I have learned in my 41 years of life:
~ Enjoy at least one thing from every day. Even if it's just your morning coffee.
~ Try to enjoy more than one thing.
~ Care what other people think, but not enough to let it change who you are.
~ Always say I love you.
~ Even if you're mad.
~ Repeat someone's name when you first meet them. It's helps you remember.
~ Treat your skin kindly.
~ Support people. No good comes from trying to bring others down.
~ Always give compliments when you think of them.
~ Take time for yourself.
~ Don't feel guilty about that.
~ Eat healthy food.
~ But don't feel guilty if you cheat.
~ Don't compare yourself to others.
~ Be happy with what you have, and not unhappy with what you don't have.
~ Splurge every once in a while.
~ Treat the earth kindly. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.
~ Spend more on healthy food.
~ Always take your makeup off before you go to bed.
~ Drink at least two large glasses of water before bed after drinking.
~ Love yourself for who you are, what you look like, and how you act, even if some days you hate all of it.
~ Don't let that stop you from always trying to be better.

Thank you all for my birthday wishes! I had a fabulous day.
Love to you all!

a bird's life

A few things that have made me smile lately:
~ We had Mimi's preschool conferences yesterday and her teacher said some really kind and wonderful things about her. Of course, as a parent, you always think your child is amazing, but it is so nice to hear that others agree. Jim and I are so proud of our little girl.
~ We have (maybe maybe maybe fingers crossed don't want to jinx it) found a place to live in California. Please, send us some good housing vibes!
~ Mimi told Ben yesterday that he really makes the world a great place. I loved hearing that. Also, I agree.

Some photos of life around here, lately:

~ Megan and my mirror selfie after our Valentine's Day styling workshop.
~ My gorgeous new laptop bag!
~ My seriously handsome boy's hair is getting so long!
~ Mimi befriended the sweetest little shop dog last weekend.
~ Thumbs up for family bowling night!
~ Some new shoes that have me dreaming of spring.
~ My Valentine and the photo that sparked many a gondolier joke.
~ These really brightened up my home on a cold, snowy day.

What is making you smile today?

outfit of the day(bird): alternate ending

blazer, jeans~ thrifted
shirt, boots~ b. (a resale shop)

So, we all know the extremely traumatizing lullaby, Rock-a-Bye Baby, right? Just in case you don't, here are the lyrics:

Rock-a-Bye baby, in the treetop.
When the wind blows, the cradle will rock.
When the bough breaks, the cradle will fall.
And down will come baby, cradle and all.

I mean, seriously? Come on. What kind of neglectful parent leaves their child in his cradle in a treetop on a windy day? Or even a calm day, for that matter? It's a horrible lullaby and it has forever bothered my daughter. So, the other day I hear her humming the tune and she suddenly says to me, "Mom, I added on to the end of Rock-a-Bye Baby. Want to hear it?" Of course I did! So she started to sing:

"The cradle will be completely smashed.
But mommy will catch you, so don't worry.
And daddy will rebuild the smashed cradle.
So don't be sad 'cause you'll still have a bed!"

Gosh, I love that kid. So much better, if you ask me. Parents and caregivers, please feel free to use this alternate ending when singing to your children!

bird.i.y.: hanging crystal chandelier

I have been wanting to make this chandelier since last November. I was at a cute little sale near my house and I saw a similar one and had to have it. I tippy toed to check the price, and lo and behold, it was $164. Yes, someone worked very hard to make it so beautiful, but being me, I decided that I could be the one to work hard to make it so beautiful. So I did.

If you want to be the one to make it so beautiful, here's what you'll need.

one lamp shade (I thrifted mine for $1.99)
one package of beaded strands (I bought mine on Ebay for $7.99)
six hanging crystals (or as many as you'd like) (I bought mine for $4.50)
one hanging lamp cord (I thrifted mine for $1.50)
hot glue gun
scissors (not pictured)

And here's what you do:

1. Go to bed because this is where you always make crafts (optional).
1.a. Pour yourself a glass of wine (also optional).
2. Tear fabric from lamp shade.

3. Glue lamp cord to the shade. This isn't necessary, as the weight of the shade will hold it in place. I just wanted to make sure it was level.

4. Decide on the length you want your beaded strands and cut to size. Hot glue them at the seams of the lamp shade (top and bottom).

5. Hot glue a strand of beads around the base and top of the lamp shade. I also glued a strand around the section of the lamp cord that you twist the bulb into (not pictured).

6. Hang lamp and try like hell to capture a good picture to show how truly beautiful it is.

7. Fail miserably at taking said picture.

8. At least get a picture of the cute stuff around the beautiful chandelier.

9. Turn off the lights and get an eery picture of the chandelier in the dark.

Easy enough, right? Especially considering you can skip steps 7-9!
