outfit of the day(bird): alone in a new city

 tank, necklace ~ Forever 21
hat ~ Target
booties ~ swap
jeans, sweater ~ thrifted

Chris and I are going to San Francisco next week. He has a conference to attend, and I am just tagging along for fun. I am so excited, as I've never been to California (I know). Anyhow, I was all excited thinking about what I'd pack (yes, I get excited about that), and where I'd shop, and just the sheer fact that for a few days, I have nothing to do.
And then I really started thinking about it, and I had a brief panic attack. Here I will be, in a big new city, with a horrible sense of direction, and I will be on my own (as Chris will be in conferences most days). What if I get lost in the city? What if I don't know how to use the trolley? (Yes that thought went through my head.) What if I look dumb in front of strangers? (Yes, that is where all of this anxiety stems from.) And then I realized, who cares. Seriously, who cares? If I get lost, I'll take a cab. If I don't know how to use the trolley, I'll ask someone. And if all else fails, I'll order a bottle of wine and sit in the hotel room reading books all week. Because that would be ok too.
Having said that, I'm happy to hear some must go-tos while in San Francisco!

  1. I fully admit I am deranged, but when I was in SF, I went to the courthouse where Marilyn Monroe married Joe DiMaggio and sought out the area on the steps (roughly) where the photo that was taken of them leaving took place.

Also cheesy but interesting (and touristy): the Alcatraz tour.

That said, SF is the best! Perfect weather. It's never too hot, never too cold. Have so much fun! Don't forget to take a pic at Golden Gate Park.

  2. I'm so jealous!! We had to miss out on the family trip out there that happened last week to go see my cousins. :( I've always kind of liked this website for a good review of the different neighborhoods:
http://www.sfgate.com/neighborhoods/. The last time we were out there going to Buffalo Exchange on Valencia St was on my list of things I wasn't leaving the city without checking out, and I think you'd like that area. I remember a thrift store that advertised items sold by the pound, but didn't get to go in so I have no idea what it's like (we had a family dinner to get to and I'd used up all my husbands' patience on other stores...haha!) but it has to be that Clothes Contact store listed in the info for the Mission: 16th & Valencia section.

In my opinion, Pier 23 Cafe is a perfect for lunch - just far enough away from Fisherman's Wharf that it doesn't feel super touristy and it's right on the water. Hands down a favorite of ours that we make it to each trip!

Of course the golden gate bridge is an amazing thing to see, and I have to agree with Kimi in that Alcatraz is pretty cool to see. I think I've been there 4 or 5 times over the years each time I visit with someone who hasn't been there before, but I do also have a strange fascination with old buildings and I used to work in re-entry so that kind of thing always grabs my interest. :)

I'm so jealous!! You'll have such a good time!! :)

  3. I'm getting a list ready for you! And I am still trying to make a visit happen! The public transit is easy to figure out, and the locals are very friendly ;) And hey, if you just ended up drinking wine in the hotel, I don't think anyone could blame you because that sounds pretty amazing.

Love that fall hat! I am on the hunt for one.

  5. I have anxiety like that too. It's so silly, really and then I snap out of it like you. We were there this past spring. A lot of it is walk-able and there are lot of places to rent a bike. And, Alcatraz is very cool. Have a great time.

  7. I LOVE San Fran! Make sure to pack a jacket!!!!!! My sister used to live in San Jose, so we visited San Francisco a lot and I just remember that even in July or August I needed a fleece zip up! You'll have so much fun, the shopping there is amazing! :)

  9. Totally!!!! And you will have so much fun! I would suggest touristy areas--they are used to people asking for directions and stuff (which I can completely relate as I am HORRIBLE with directions as well). Golden Gate is great, Chinatown is fun and there is a lot of shopping near Chinatown too. Enjoy yourself! Glad you get a minivaca! I adore the layers in this outfit! That sounds really bloggery but it is true. Love love love the boots!

  11. I LOVE San Fran! You have to visit Crissy Field, Golden Gate (of course), Foreign Cinema restaurant (you will LOVE - they've got some great vegetarian options), take an evening boat cruise if you can. If you have time, head just outside to Tiburon. It's gorgeous there, and there is a cute little restaurant right on San Francisco Bay called Sam's. You can sit on the bay and enjoy your meal. :) Have fun!

  12. You look great. I love your hat!

I have never been to San Francisco but have always wanted to visit. I am the same as you in a new city (even in cities I have visited a few times). I have a horrible sense of direction and worry about getting lost.

  18. Oh the jealousy! I've never been to California either, and though I'd likely have the same fears (especially the getting lost one, I'm the queen of that) I'd love to go and just explore/relax/enjoy. I hope you have the best time!!

Wear comfortable shoes! My husband and I have bought several pairs when there as such great shopping. I agree with Alcatraz and China town is great too. I will also prepare more info for you!
