outfit of the day(bird): thoughts on style

I recently had someone ask me to describe my style in three words and I couldn't do it. Not only because I am super awkward and get completely tongue tied when put on the spot (like forget my name and how to use my voice and totally freeze up type of awkward), but also because I am not certain I have a specific style. There is definitely a certain look that I love and, when I see celebrities or people on the street dressed that way, it definitely resonates with me. It is a sort of classic yet messy yet pulled together, slightly boho, sort of 'out there' but not too 'out there' look (see, that's totally more than three words!) that seems like it would be easy to pull off but actually takes some work to make look right. It's definitely not a look that I wear every day or even aspire to wear every day or even really think about every day, but it's definitely a look that I aspire to sometimes. I guess my question is this: what is style? It's so different for everyone. What I love, someone else might hate. Life isn't Pinterest. We don't all look and dress the same. And we shouldn't! That would be no fun! To me, style isn't about wearing the latest trends and the most expensive fashions. It's so much more personal than that. It can sometimes be so hard not to get sucked into certain trends and covet what someone else might wear or have, but I guess I would rather look unique and wear what I love than to fit in and be as trendy as possible. And not everyone will necessarily think it's fashionable or whatever, but it shouldn't matter, because it's what I love. I don't really know where I am going with this other than it has been something I have been thinking about lately. My style has evolved and changed quite a bit since I was in my twenties and I kind of feel anther shift coming on, so it's just been on my mind. And, since this is a personal style type of blog, I thought I would try and sort my thoughts out here. Maybe not my best idea!?!

Aaaannnnnywaaaay...what do you think? Do you have a personal style that could be described in three words? Did you even make it this far in this post of ramblings? If so, congrats and thank you and I'm sorry!

  1. First off, these photos are darling. Nora, your hair is looking adorable as it grows out! Secondly, I agree with everything said here. I definitely cannot sum my style up in 3 words, though I guess "thrifty" is the first that comes to mind because it explains most of my closet. I definitely think style should never be measured by brand-names or expense, and I actually don't find much inspiration or creativity in style that revolves around those things (can I say that??). Anyway, part of the reason I love Two Birds so much is it's fun to see how people mix and match unique pieces and make them their own, which you ladies do consistently. So, yay for thrifted clothes and making them work!! :)

  2. That question is very hard for me to answer too. I have so many moods and how I feel that day (or hour) affects what I wear. Many times I go for comfort. I'd rather have blister free feet than suffer because some heels look more fashionable than flats but who cares?? I think that comes with turning 40. I dress for myself rather than others. Your hair looks so cute kind of wavy. You have some great hair and love the gold accents.

  3. It can be hard to describe our style, especially when we may not always wear the same type of look day in and day out. It's fun to mix things up and be creative with our closet!

  4. I agree.... It is really hard to define personal style for the most part.

PS: Love your outfit... beyond adorable!

  5. I LOVE these photos, so fun and artistic! You look gorgeous! And it is SO hard for me to describe my style because I like to try a lot of things, from feminine and classic to edgy, eccentric and bold! It depends on how I'm feeling and what I'm trying to accomplish that day I think!

  6. I'd never be able to sum up my style in only three words. My style changes from day to day, although I guess I'd say I'm more feminine and dressy than not. But I agree that style is so much more than the latest fashion. And I definitely love your style - whatever it is. :)

  8. I definitely cannot describe my style in three words - I'm not even sure I can do it in more than that! I think style is being comfortable in your own skin or something to that effect.

You are very gorgeous in these pictures, that's what I know for sure!

  9. Your style is, always looks great...3 words. I can't begin to describe mine but comfort would be in there somewhere.

  10. Aw I hate when people ask you to label or fixate your style into words. It is what it is and for many that changes all the time--sometimes day to day! I think you always look great and comfortable and I always love the inspirations you ladies post.

  12. I love this outfit. I call my fashion style girly. Due to I'm all about the pinks, bow, flower and so on.

  13. LOL-Nora I think it was a perfect idea for the blog to share these thoughts. I can't put my own style into three words either and whenever someone does it doesn't really capture it all unless that person really wears a uniform all the time, like emo or vintage 50s. If one person says her style is classic, simple separates she might still look very different from what I imagine classic simple separates to be or what someone else who describes her style the same way might wear. I think style if too visual for this labelling concept to work well. It's a guideline at best, something to help yourself focus when shopping perhaps. But even then I figure if I like it then it is my style. Why limit myself?

You look adorable in these photos! I love the way your pixie has grown out-so cute! I love the look of this outfit. I would call it chic feminine casual, but you might not.

  14. These pics are so awesome! I think you nailed it. IDK what to say when people say "Style", I mean, I get it if someone likes JUST vintage clothes, or JUST boho clothes, etc. But so many of us like to mix it up with whatever catches our eye, so I don't really know how to explain it.

  15. I love those shoes. I also have no idea what I would describe my style as... I pretty much just wear what I like and I have absolutely no regard for whether or not it's similar to something else I like or if it's "in" or whatever.

  16. I could never just describe my style in three words. I hate to put myself in a box like that. Those shoes are so fun!!

  17. I love love love that shirt, so if you ever decide to hand it down I call dibs. Okay? Ok.
Now that that's out of the way, I completely agree with you about style. It is personal and for me it's such a mixture. It can vary on the day, my mood, the weather.

  18. oh gosh, this was beautiful - honestly, you make style seem like home or peace or some kind of calm. i think your success is knowing that it's not about trends or pinterest or coveting, but about something deeper, intuitive and creative. just lovely.

  19. Can't really describe my style as it is a mixture but I'd say 'flowery' is often a good description!x

  20. So well said! It's so hard to describe your style in just three words because I feel like it's constantly changing. I know that my style is colorful, but beyond that it really changes. One day I'm feeling nerdy, another boho, another urban. All still me, but with a twist. Love your top by the way!

  21. Your photos are such a darling. I adore this look and the hair too. I wish I can pull off a pixie hair style. I don't know my style too but I do adore cute and flared skirts. Mine is towards more cutesy, lol.

  22. These pics are amazing, Nora! You look lovely! My style in three words? Ain't no way! LOL! I'm like you--can't verbalize it--at least not succinctly. Great post! T. http://tickledpinkwoman.blogspot.com

  23. Oh Nora! I loved every word of this ramble. I feel style is what you make it. Style is what we like and how we want to be in that "like". I feel like I know my style but I know I also can't verbalize that style; it isn't preppy, it isn't Dress Barn and it isn't tremendously fancy. My style is more "dressy casual" if anything but I just know what I like. I like to compare choice of style to choice of men. I know my type of "Man" for instance, I should, I have had 3 husbands, and I know my type for dang sure. lol

Thanks for the wonderful compliments!!! Thanks for being there for me during my times I have to be napping instead of blogging. But many of my symptoms this cycle are minimal and my energy is back. Yay!!! ♥, Renae

  24. Ha : ) I think the reason it is hard to describe is because it is like shifting sands...changing all the time, depending on your mood and the time of day.

I usually use artsy, because I want to be known as being artistic, and used to use funky and quirky but they are kind of the same thing. Really I'm all over the map schizophrenic artsy boho. ; ) Oh yeah. That works. ; 0

  26. Fashion is what is offered in the store, style is how you put it together at home. I would define my style as an eclectic boho preppy.
I love your hair and shoes in this!

  27. I'm lovin' the mix of polka dots in the top and stripes on the shoes...pretty! I'm all for wearing what you love and feel fabulous in...whether it's something that is trendy at the moment, was trendy ten years ago, or maybe was never trendy at all. All long as you love it, that's all that matters.
