bird's nest: shoes, scarves, and necklaces (oh my)

it's no secret that i love my shoes. it's also no secret that i love my necklaces. and while i don't love wearing scarves as much, that doesn't stop me from buying copious amounts because i think i will wear them. (don't get me wrong, i love the scarves i own, i just don't wear them as much as i should.) (i don't want to make the scarves feel bad.) but when it comes to storing the shoes, necklaces, and scarves, i had a problem. (ok, i admit the real problem is the buying and not the storing, but can we all just agree that one can never have too many shoes?)

i found myself throwing shoes all over the house. i kept my boots in a chest, and my shoes in a number of closets (and in the front hallway much to chris' dismay), but i wanted a place to keep them all. so i decided to take action. and that's where the trouble began.

i scoured craigslist for bookshelves..i figured i needed at least three of the same kind. and i finally found some for super cheap...and now i know why. i paid for them, and as chris and i were walking out with them, they proceed to just break. all of them. as we were walking to the car. being me, i shrugged it off and decided i could fix them. being chris, he was annoyed because he knew he'd have to fix them...which he did. he's a good man like that. i painted the backing, though...so that counts for something, right?

here is how i store all of my shoes....in all of their glory.

the good news about storing all of my shoes in a visible place is that it has stopped me from buying a ton more shoes. the bad news is that it has stopped me from buying a ton more shoes. at some point in the very near future, i'm going to need another bookshelf. the very near future.

i had to use the top of the shelves for my tranny shoes. and i mean that in the best way possible...i think everyone should wear 5" heels every now and again. see those ones second from the left? those are my wedding shoes. yep, i walked up a muddy hill in those, in front of 200 people. and i wasn't scared at all.

what i failed to think about when i came up with this idea is that i rarely buy a shoe with a heel less than 3". that doesn't leave as much shelf space as say 100 pairs of flats. this (and only this) is the reason i need another bookshelf.

next to the shoes is my scarves. they are stored on a vintage crib spring. it's got built in storage that is perfect for hanging scarves.

oh, and that picture you saw up above...that's a painting my dad painted of my older sister and i. yes, my face was that big at one point in my life. i'm pretty sure it hasn't grown since then.

and yes, my sister's hair looked just like that. also, i wish i still had those eyebrows.

the shoes and scarves are in our basement, because i certainly don't have enough room in our bedroom to store all of those shoes. but jewelery i can keep upstairs. i made this little necklace holder out of an old ladder trellis and nails. easy enough.

you can see the original post about my trellis diy here.

and that's it. that's how i store my accessories. someday chris says we can turn one of the rooms in our house into a closet...but that would probably involve me cleaning it out, so we'll see when that happens. for now i am perfectly happy with what we've got.

happy friday!!

A lot of cash home incredibly tight, but inefficient compared to the old product is removed and replaced with modern energy-saving models could get.In fact, manufacturers have recently its original value by the use of mechanical impact on the global warming, an attempt to be able to measure, the efficiency of household appliances to display the system was introduced. However, G (least efficient) to A (most efficient) to work on the scale that is also the cost of the product is a serious indication of how much you can provide.

  12. Now that´s a lot of SHOES and my husband would have a heart attack if I put all of my shoes like this! So I keep mine in a small shoe closet, in the hall closet and in the other closet of the spare room just so he´ll think that I only have a few pairs. ;) As for scarves, we have the same motto. Collect and wear later or not. ;)

  13. I can't tell you how jealous I am of those shelves. I have so many shoes and they are all in storage crates, a laundry basket, and one wall rack. Oh and the floor all over my room.

This would be heaven for my shoes.

  14. Shoe porn!!! Also, now I don't feel so bad. ; )

I have loved having all my shoes in one place since we got our Ikea storage, but as you pointed out, it sure makes "the problem" that much more obvious.

Bummer about the bookcases but great your hubby was able to fix them. Mine would have dumped them in the garbage.

  15. Okay, this is amazing! I would LOVE to get a bookshelf to house my shoes one day, but there isn't enough space in my room. I love the look of them all lined up and pretty and it makes it so much easier to pick the pair you want to wear!

  17. That is so awesome! I am totally dying of shoe envy right now! Ugh, I made it a rule that if I buy a new pair of shoes, then I have to get rid of a pair that I already have. Sometimes I don't even do that, and well. I love that you painted the backs of the shelves too! It makes for such a pretty backdrop!

  18. WOW! That is a collection of shoes. Now when my husband says I have too many shoes, I can show him this :-)

  19. The shoe storage is amazing!!!! I so wish we had the space for something like this. You rock even more after seeing the heel on your wedding shoes and walking up a hill in those suckers. You go girl!

  20. You're so funny. So nice of you to worry about the sensitive feelings of your scarves. A whole room closet. Wouldn't that be nice!

  22. I never have enough shoe storage space. I also think it'd be nice if I loved flats - I could fit WAAAY more of them in my closet. Those sky high heels just don't work as well. :)

  23. haha...i was going to ask, "where is this?!" i wish we had an extra room to turn into a closet...you totally need to do that! i have managed to squeeze one half bookshelf into my walk-in closet, the rest of my shoes are literally in bags and containers in another closet, and that's why i use the same pairs over and over! too lazy to dig for others. this is an awesome display!

  28. Scarves and jewelry, definitely things I collect. I'm a bit behind you when it comes to shoes. I have written a blog post about my closet but haven't posted it yet. I'm thinking about organisers and such. I definitely don't need a whole room but if I had a proper closet organiser I could fit way more clothes and shoes!

  29. I NEED your shoe collection, or at least to be best friends with you so I can steal your shoes. Goodness I'm impressed.

  30. I feel like angels should be singing with this post haha! I love the bookshelf idea. I'm currently using one of our many hallway closets as my "shoe closet" but since I know that this is not my "forever home" I still keep them in their boxes so they won't get damaged when I move again, but when I'm finally settled, I like the idea of using bookshelves better - gives them a better display!

  36. Nice way to store your footwear! I'd be scared to do that - for some reason I feel like I need to keep shoe boxes, plus I'm scared to see how many pairs of shoes I have, hehe!

  37. Convenient way to have your shoes stored.
Are you sharing shoes with your sister? That would explain the amount of heels you have lol :)

  39. My shoes that I currently own in Europe are in 4 different closets. I have at least 80 pairs. But I have over 100 pairs in US. Anyway I envy your shoe collection and beautiful way you store them. I also own way too many scarves and necklaces. Last year alone I added about 25 necklaces and like a dozen scarves to my collection. And this year another 8 necklaces and like 5 more scarves. So I feel you. You did a great job with that Ladder. I pinned all of these BTW. =)
