outfit of the day(bird): rusted roots

dress ~ F21
coat, shoes ~ Target
belt, necklaces ~ vintage, thrifted
earrings ~ Heartbreaker

i dye my own hair because it's easy and cheap...i never do anything fancy, just a similar shade to my real color, enough to cover the grey (yes, our family is known to prematurely grey).

but every once in a while, i decide to do something outside of the (literal) box. these impulse colors are usually always fueled by hormones, and i almost always regret them afterwards.

so last week, i decided to add a little red to my hair. i saw one of those boxes that promises to lighten even the darkest of hair, and for some reason, i half believed them and bought it.

after what looked like a law & order episode in my bathtub, the color was washed out. i dried my hair and went about my business. you know, inside you cannever really see the red in your hair. and it wasn't until my kids kept exclaiming, "mama, your hair is so red, especially on the top!" that i realized that the box that promised to lighten even the darkest of colors did, in fact, lighten my hair, but only my grey, grey roots.

so now, because i don't want to ruin my hair with another box of color so soon after the red disaster, i will walk around with red roots. very red roots. luckily it's mostly only noticeable in the sunlight...and blog pictures. (you're scrolling back up now, aren't you?)

have you ever had a hair dye fail?

xo,
megan bird

  2. Super cute dress. I used to dry my hair with the box color and would end up with some crazy shade of blonde.

  3. Great dress and I adore the fact you paired this with a leather jacket--fab contrast! You look lovely! Hugs, T. http://tickledpinkwoman.blogspot.com

  4. You probably already know this, but since I don't get to talk about this stuff very much anymore, here goes: the reason it didn't lighten your hair is because color can't lift color - but your roots are natural, so they lifted AND deposited the color. In the beauty business, this is called "hot roots". Next time you're feeling cray-cray and want to do something different/reddish to your hair, pick a shade darker than your normal color.

  6. oops, watch out for that car!! LOL I love this outfit, the boots and of course your hair!! Yes, I had a color moment years ago when I thought I was enhancing my naturally(no grey present then) dark brown hair with a dark brown color!! The result was this deathly, gothic black color against my winter washed out skin!!

  8. ha ha! Oops. That is why I go to the hairdressers still. I'm scared of this happening.

That said I do love this vivid pink with the black.

  10. Hahah whoops! I used to dye my own hair and then I left it up to the professionals at the salon. It's been quite a few years since I've dyed it though...the maintenance was getting expensive!

  11. Eek! Well it happens! I bought a box of red hair dye once that ended up being almost magenta on my hair. It was one of the Feria ones I think. I never bought it again!

I do really love this dress and jacket look together - hot mama!

  13. haha! Whoops! Luckily I've never dyed my hair (well, some insane stripes back in the college days) because I would be clueless! I'm excited that I'm getting some grey hairs - I think it's pretty - like built in highlights! I love the hot pink and leather today - you're like a Pink Lady AND a T-Bird!

  14. I think your hair looks great--especially with this bright pink dress! Once my best friend was putting blonde highlights in his hair and I decided to try to add some to mine . . . it was an orangey hair disaster!

  15. Oh noes! I have the same issue! I dyed mine dark brown, wanted to go lighter and now the roots are lighter. Whoops! I actually didn't notice until you pointed it out.

I love this look! You remind me of Zooey!

  16. Red washes out so quickly (I should know) so I wouldn't worry too much! You really can't tell in person :)

  17. I use to have the problem of going too dark. LOL Vampire-effect! If this wasn't permanent color it should eventually wash out. If not, just go with a darker color. But you still may get a hint of red until it all goes away. My family is premature grey too. So I've been coloring for awhile. Hair color keeps going up in price too. You look lovely. Love your dress and leather jacket.

  19. There's a product at Sally's called "Get the red out" that helps life it from your hair. It's not chemical and doesn't hurt you. But I do like it!

  20. I did scroll up and check. I did. I DIDN'T notice it at all the first time cuz I was noticing your cute jacket and the hot pink dress underneath the jacket and it's great feminine skirt. LOL re the Law and Order reference.

I have a great place here in Utah that is a beauty supply store (local, not a chain francise) and the owner is so smart. He is coaching me on my color and cut ideas and he is so great. He gives me a free course in beauty school 101 each time I am there just in our conversation. I got my nail polish on today's post there too. This is their URL : http://www.ogdenbeauty.com/

  21. Love that pink dress with the leather jacket. And I don't ever try to color my hair at home. Knowing me it would either come out like bright blue or fall out!!

  24. My worst hair dye disaster was back in high school. I had lightened my hair to almost platinum-white blonde, and then decided to go back to my natural color. So I home dyed my hair using an ash blonde... and it came out green. Not cool green, either. Muddy, army green. Many tears were shed and my mom had to haul my hysterical ass to the salon to get it fixed. Never. Again.

  25. I think the red is kind of fun! I like it.:)

And I've had countless disasters on my head. Most of them involve shades of orange. None of them good shades.

  26. Who hasn't had a hair dye fail? I do like the red... And it would have been amazing if had been all over your head!
