outfit of the day(bird): comfort zone

dress, necklace ~ H&M
rings ~ F21, local artist
shoes ~ thrifted

the night before we did the fashion show, we were told that we would be mc-ing from atop the runway. there was more than one reason why this freaked me out. one, i am terrified of public speaking. once i am doing it, i'm fine, but thinking about it beforehand makes me want to vomit. secondly, the outfit i had planned on wearing was a flouncy and short skirt. very flouncy and very short. so what are two women to do when they are told plans change? well, shop of course. nora and i ran all over southdale to find new outfits to wear, thinking we would be four feet over the whole audience.

i was shopping on pure adrenaline, and decided to get this dress. it is not at all in my comfort zone. one, it's very short. two, it's very tight. three, it's very short and very tight. i was not at all comfortable. i am the person who hates tight clothes around my belly. even before i had kids, i wasn't comfortable with it, and now, even more so.

so what is a woman to do who feels uncomfortable in her short and tight dress? spanx, of course.

in the end, my nerves for the show overrode any fear i had of showing a little belly bulge, or showing off too much leg in a short dress. i stopped caring, and started having fun instead. oh, and the last minute decision to not make us stand on the runway worked in my favor, too.

there is a renaissance festival every summer about 30 minutes south of our house. eva and i had girls' day yesterday and decided to go to an apple orchard, which happens to be about 10 miles south of the festival. we were scooting right along on the freeway, both excited with thoughts of honeycrisps and hay rides, and then traffic stopped. two lanes of freeway, at a stand-still, with no end in sight. i couldn't figure out what was going on, and then i realized it was the festival.

two hours later (yep, two hours) (ok, we stopped at taco bell), we were almost there, and i was seething on the inside. i am not a fan of traffic jams, and i was irrationally furious at all the festival goers. who did they think they were stopping traffic when all i wanted to do was enjoy this beautiful fall day with my daughter?

and then i looked over at all the people who were going to the festival, and i could no longer be upset. i realized then that it's almost impossible to be mad at men in puffy-sleeved shirts and women in medieval tavern wench dresses, driving acuras and smart cars.

soon after that, traffic eased up and we were on our way. and by the time we had picked 10 pounds of honeycrisps, the traffic jam was all but forgotten.

happy monday!

bird seed: glazed pumpkin cookies

it may still feel like summer in minnesota (yay!) but the other day i had a hankering to make something pumpkin-y and delicious that tasted like fall. pumpkin pie is my husband's specialty, so i wasn't going to mess around with that. and i have never been good at the fruit breads. for some reason, mine never turn out that great. (any tips on this would be awesome!) cookies are kind of my go-to when it comes to baking, so that's what i went to. i made soft pumpkin cookies with a powdered sugar glaze and they were so yummy! and easy, which is obviously a huge bonus.

here's what you'll need:
for the cookies:
2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
1/2 cup butter (1 stick), softened
1 cup pumpkin puree*
1 large egg
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

for the glaze:
2 cups sifted powdered sugar
3 tablespoons milk
1 tablespoon melted butter
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

preheat your oven to 350 degrees and grease your baking sheets.
combine the flour, baking soda, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt in a bowl.
beat the sugar and butter in a larger bowl until well blended.
beat in pumpkin, egg, and vanilla until smooth.
gradually beat in the flour mixture.
drop rounded tablespoons onto your prepared baking sheets.
bake for 15-18 minutes, until the edges are firm.
cool on baking racks.

while the cookies are baking, make the glaze. sift two cups of powdered sugar (i just used a wire strainer) into a bowl. add the milk, butter, and vanilla and mix until smooth.

once the cookies have slightly cooled, drizzle the glaze on top! then eat. and that's it! easy as pie cookies!

someone was a bit excited to see these on the counter when she woke up from her nap! (check out that bedhead!)

 bon appetit!

*if you look closely at the photo of the ingredients, you will notice that i have a can of pumpkin pie mix rather than pumpkin puree. this is what happens when you send your husband to the store for pumpkin puree. pumpkin pie mix has added sugar and spices (for those people who can't just add their own???), but it still worked out okay! next time i make these cookies, though, i will do the shopping!

outfit of the day(bird): what'shoe gonna do about it?

 shirt, panst ~ Marshalls
shoes ~ thrifted
necklace ~ F21
watch ~ Cents of Style
bracelet ~ Tiffany & Co.

i took to pinterest to find a cute and crafty shoe storage solution. what i found were many, many ways to store 10 pairs of shoes.

if i only owned 10 pairs of shoes, i wouldn't need a shoe storage solution, i would need more shoes!

wish me luck...i have a few ideas up my sleeves which i am sure i will be sharing with you soon!

inspiration picture for september 30: kate beckinsale

kate beckinsale looks pretty great for having just gotten off a plane. then again, she always looks pretty great! i am loving her moto style jacket and gorgeous printed trousers. and, of course, those amazing strappy wedges (which, even on sale, are too rich for my blood!) i can guarantee you that my entire outfit on monday will cost much much less than the sale price of those shoes. and that is the fun of inspiration monday! star style on the budget of a bird! we hope you play along. not sure how? click here to find out!

love*birds: 9.25.13

things i am loving this week:
~ i deep cleaned the kids room on saturday, and they have kept them spotless since then.
~ granted, i had to bribe them.
~ however, they are easy to bribe...clean rooms until christmas, and they get a giant sucker. that's it.
~ the weather is phenomenal – warm and sunny and beautiful!
~ i actually got to run in the sunshine on sunday. i normally run at 5am in the dark, but we went at 8 instead, and it made a world of difference on my morale!
~ nora and i are styling and hosting a fashion show at our local mall this weekend. we are so excited!!
~ we booked another camping weekend. i love fall camping. it gets chilly, but it's a good excuse for a fire and snuggles.

and here are some other things we are loving this week:

megan bird

i love this necklace. i have wanted a personalized necklace with my kids initials on it, but haven't found one that suite me perfectly. this might be it!

oversized feather tee
i love the color and print on this tee. if i could live in cute oversized tees everyday, i think i would!

1950s wiggle dress

i think there is nothing sexier than a vintage black wiggle dress. the toule panel makes it sexier, and the bow makes it flirty. i love this dress!

vintage fringe booties

i don't know when i'd have occasion to wear white fringe booties, but i'm sure i could find one (or make one up). i am in love with these...the metal toe detail is brilliant!

i am a huge fan of turquoise jewelery. i love this ring, i love the lead design, and the big chunky feel to it. it's a gorgeous piece that stands out all on its own!

Winnipeg Style
rebecca has such a fun and unique sense of style. i am in love with the pants in this post. she looks so fresh and fun in this colorful outfit! her whimsical bag adds to the fun!

there is something so sweet about henry reading to eva in this pic. any time they aren't fighting just melts my heart, but this was especially sweet.

nora bird

i am madly in love with this sweater. it is so cool and looks super cozy! and it would be perfect for the warm fall weather we are enjoying here right now!

i am a huge sucker for vintage riding boots. i have far too many pairs, but i always feel like i could use another! this pair is perfection. i love the length and the warm, honey color!

this coffee cozy made me laugh. my husband and i both need one!

i am obsessed with this clutch. it is so simple, chic, and cool.

this dress reminds me of a modern day little red riding hood! i love the loose style, the polka dots, and, of course, the hood! so cute!

cee is looking chic and casual in this post. i love when someone can take a leather skirt and make it work for day. so inspired!

follow along @mrsbeyers

we spent last weekend relaxing at a friend's cabin. it was wonderful. i snapped this photo on saturday morning right when we woke up. not a bad view to start your day!

what are you loving this week?

outfit of the day(bird): not to do list

shirt~ Target
pants~ LOFT
shoes~ eBay
necklace~ vintage, gift

things i shouldn't have done yesterday but did anyway:
~ gone to marshall's three times. (it was two different marshall's!) (i was looking for something specific!) (excuses, excuses.)
~ bought three new pairs of jeans (i have a problem, people.)
~ bought a new pair of shoes (it's a big problem.)
~ bought two perfectly slouchy black tees. (i didn't have a perfectly slouchy tee in black yet!) (now i have two!) (problems.)
~ made myself a healthy hummus and veggie spinach wrap for lunch. (this was actually something i did that was good and responsible, but i only did it to avoid eating leftover cold pizza.) (i still ate the pizza.) (and the wrap.)
~ written this post, because now you all know how crazy i am. (as if you didn't already know.)

i also wanted to share an outtake from when jim was taking these outfit photos. at one point i put my hand in one of my pockets and continued to pose for the photos. jim suddenly began making fun of me, saying, "oh yeah. you've got your hand in your pocket. you're relaxed. you're casual." and that made me laugh. that made me laugh really really hard.
but i totally held my pose. a true professional.

i hope you're all having a great day!

inspiration monday: secondhand outfit notes

the inspiration
olivia wilde
megan bird

 jeans ~ The Clothes Mentor
shoes, shirt ~ thrifted
watch ~ Cents of Style
earrings ~ Target

nora bird

shirt ~ Target
jeans ~ Old Navy
booties ~ Shoe Dazzle

~ when buying my jeans, i put my hands in the pockets and pulled out a band-aid. if they hadn't been pretty much exactly what i was looking for, i might have not bought them. also, this is exactly why i keep hand sanitizer in my purse.
~ i wore my shirt to impress my son. he is fascinated with wolves, and lately, not so fascinated with me. the shirt impressed him, and i was happy.
~ when i found these shoes at the thrift shop, there was no tag on them. it was also 50% off purple tag items that day. when i brought them up to pay, they informed me they would be $7.99 and i promptly said, "purple tag, right?" she agreed. so my shoes were only $4.00. it never hurts to ask, right?

happy monday!
