outfit of the day(bird): mother knows best

jacket~ vintage, thrifted
dress~ hand-me-down (i think from megan)
boots~ Steve Madden
leggings~ Target

i am just getting over a viral sinus infection (so it couldn't be treated with antibiotics) and it was horrible. i don't remember ever feeling so awful before. my head hurt, my face hurt, my teeth hurt, i couldn't sleep, i couldn't eat...i just wanted to curl up and cry (which i may have done.) i felt really really yucky. i saw my mom on friday night, just when i was just beginning to feel pretty awful, and she suggested i try a neti pot. i brushed her suggestion off, telling her that neti pots freaked me out and i would never use one. why would you willingly pour water into your nose? yikes! i went home that night, took some tylenol, and tried, unsuccessfully, to sleep. i suffered pretty much all weekend, popping tylenol and sudafed, drinking hot tea, taking steamy showers and baths. nothing really helped and i was miserable. finally, on monday, a nurse recommended that i try a neti pot...and so i did. and i literally felt better almost immediately. it was amazing! i was a convert. i immediately texted my mom and told her that i had done the neti pot and i should have listened to her. perhaps i wouldn't have had to suffer all weekend? so, i have learned my lesson. mother knows best and i should always listen to her. it only took me thirty-three years to learn. sorry about that, mom! i love you!

have you ever used a neti pot???

xoxo, nora bird

  6. Love the jacket! We have a neti pot at home, but luckily have not needed to use it since we bought it a couple years ago. I agree, it's a daunting thing to do especially when you're already feeling sick and yucky. Glad you're feeling better!

  8. Neti pots freak me out, though I'm sure I'll get around to trying them eventually. I usually get pretty sick with allergies in the Winter. Mother does know best! Also, that dress is cuuuute!

  9. I have a friend who swears by neti pots - she's an asthma sufferer and says it has helped her so much. I haven't tried it myself, but I think if I was miserable enough I would. I hope you are starting to feel better Nora, that sounds like no fun at all. You do look really pretty in this outfit though!

  15. I'm a resonant singer and I get terrible sinus problems (the teeth hurting you describe -- that's the worst!!) so I use a Neti pot ALL the dang time! I couldn't sing without it!

It was weird the first couple of times but it's like anything -- you get used to it.

    My tips:
    1. Use filtered water, which is easy if you have a filter on your tap or fridge faucet.
    2. If you have time, boil the water and then let it sit for 10-15 minutes to cool down (I sometimes cheat and add an ice cube, which wasn't technically boiled but cools it down quicker).
    3. Always add 1/2 a teaspoon of baking soda! It alkalizes the water and makes it milder on your sinuses.

These things make sure that it's totally comfortable, and won't feel like it's burning, or make your sinuses inflamed, which defeats the purpose of draining them.

Okay, end nerdy rant on Neti pots. You look adorable, btw.

  16. I don't do the pot, but I do the squeeze bottle with the saline and it's amazing. It's really the only thing that truly helps when my sinuses act up. I'm so glad you're feeling better. And I'm so glad you're wearing that jacket because it's gorgeous and looks gorgeous on you.

  17. I've never used a Neti Pot before I've always been a bit freaked out by the idea of intentionally shooting water up my nose but I'm going to give it a try the next time my allergies/sinuses flare up because I can so relate to the misery that is constant congestion.

Glad you're on the mend and for someone who hasn't been feeling very well you look amazing. I love the embroidery on your dress.

  20. I have literally been talking about Neti Pots with all my friends lately trying to figure out if they are any good. I've been having sinus issues like crazy and I have heard about the wonders of the pot, but it freaks me out too! This might just be a sign that I need to give in...

Oh, don't get me started on Neti Pots
My yoga instructor talked me into doing it a year or so ago, I almost never talked to her again, but it did work. LOL

  28. I love this outfit. So chic for winter. I have used something similar to the netipot.. it's more like a giant water pick for your nose instead. Most uncomfortable awkward experience but the relief after is amazing! Hope you're feeling better! xx sylvie
