curious birds: spam, the other white meat

blouse ~ TJ Maxx

faux leather pants ~ F21
earrings ~ For Love 21
booties ~ Target

it's come to our attention that many of our comments over the last few months have gone to spam (so check your spam folders, we may be in there). dawn so kindly sent us an email saying how delighted she was to find 25 comments in her spam folder, all from us. she then proceeded to answer all of the questions we had asked in each comment. it made my monday (thanks, dawn)! we have also gotten a few other emails bringing it to our attention...so thanks to everyone who noticed. and to all of you who didn't...we hope you find our comments soon, because we really have been reading your blogs!

so here's the thing that i started thinking about – why do people comment on blogs, and what brings you back to a blog each day? we seem to have a handful of the same bloggers who comment on our blogs every day (thanks!), and i think, for the most part, that we follow each of those bloggers. it's kind of like a circle of friends, in my opinion. if we like a blog, we follow it. if we like a post, we comment. if we have nothing good to say (which rarely happens), we don't comment. if we are super busy one day, we may not comment at all. if we are bored, we might search out new blogs to read and follow, and consequently, comment on. we try to respond to everyone that comments on our blog...we might not always get a chance, but we love to say hello to new followers/commenters and old friends who are there every day. but for us, it's not really political. we had a few people tell us that they stopped coming to our blog because they thought we weren't reading and/or commenting on theirs, when really our comments were just going to spam. that made us a little sad, because we didn't realize that some people only read our blog because we read theirs. obviously we know that some people only comment to get new followers, and really that is fine. for us, we love our handful of readers...we do feel like we know them (you), even if we are all in different cities, states, or countries. we also love meeting new bloggers, so come on in and join our little community. we might not be the most popular, but we can guarantee you at least five days of funny stories, cute kid pictures and outfits that we may or may not have worn to see australian men strip down to thongs. (and to those of you who asked, no, they were not hot. they were gross, and greasy, but it was hilarious.)

thanks for visiting today, we really do appreciate everyone who follows us along our little blogging journey. know that if you are ever in minneapolis, we will have a glass of wine waiting for you here...

and in the comments, we'd love to know what makes you read, comment on, and follow a blog.

have a great day!
xo,
megan bird

  2. what a beautiful top! I comment on other blogs because I do feel like a handful of bloggers have become my friends and I love the little glimpse into their lives. I also know how much I love comments on my posts too so I want to give it to others!

  3. Aw, that happens to me too, your comments go to my spam but I get email notifications that you commented so I just manually go in and fix it when it does. I wonder why!? I follow you girls because I think you are great. I love your themes of posts and look forward to each day! :) I love how you both of your own sense of fashion and how its so similar but so different as well! :) Keep up the good work. and pshh people who only follow because you comment back or don't because you don't. There are plenty of blogs out there that are like that for me, that don't comment back on mine. For example the Good Life for Less, she never comes to mine but I love her blog that I support because i think she has an excellent blog and I like her! You gals are the same to me, Ill follow no matter what. :)

  5. I find I comment most of the writer of a blog actually asks a question of the readers or if I need to click over to the blog versus just keep reading in my reader.
Also, as I non-blogger, I guess I just feel like I am not that involved in the bloggy world so I forget to leave comments?
Love those leopard print booties btw!

  6. I was trying to remember when I had seen you wear this - and then I remembered your Instagram feed the night of the show.:) Love the split top!

I'm honestly not a big commenter on blogs. I read a lot, but don't leave comments every day. I do know that this means I get fewer comments in return - because there are some people that only comment to boost their traffic. But I know that there are people reading who just like to read it, even without getting something in return. Please know that there's rarely a day that goes by that I don't read yours - even if it happens to be a silent day for me.:)

  7. I don't always (or often) comment, but I never miss a post. (I guess that makes me one of those creepy lurkers?) I love your blog because I feel like the way you write is probably the way you speak. It sounds real, if that makes sense. I don't like bloggers who try too hard, or who make it seem like their lives are perfect all the time. Plus I covet most of your clothes, get great inspiration for stepping outside my own comfort zone fashion-wise, laugh at your stories, and I think your kids are all gorgeous. :)(And, for the record, I'm not really interested in how many people read my blog, so my motivation for commenting is never fishing for more readers. I comment simply because I feel like the post deserves a comment! Though, of course, I always appreciate comments as well.)

  8. I use disqus for commenting, and for some reason I get a lot of totally legit comments in my spam folder (that I always forget to check, gah!) too. This is frustrating, because I don't want anyone to think I'm igoring their comments--I love to read what people have to say!
I try to comment on blogs as often as I can, but it definitely depends on how busy I am. There are a few blogs that I comment on every day and they comment on mine, and I like this because it's like talking to a friend every day. However, it's impossible to do that with all the blogs I read, so I try to comment when I have something to say or if a post really speaks to me. I also try to visit the blogs (if I can find them) of people who leave me comments. I figure if they're taking the time to come to my little space in the blogosphere, I can do the same for them. (Although I tend to ignore the "great post, follow me" comments.) Holy soapbox I've rambled on for long enough now I think!

  9. you're right! I think bloggers form their own little circle of friends, and commenting on blogs is like catching up with them! I know that's how I comment at least :)

  10. Or several glasses of wine waiting... ;) LOL! I say that because I had so much fun at the meet up :) I agree... I comment on the blogs I love because I get inspiration from their outfits or enjoy reading (which here I enjoy BOTH :) ) and I hope that people who come to my blog and comment feel the same way about my blog! And sometimes I lack something good to say but I might say it anyway :)

Cute blouse Megan! Love this look! Happy Tuesday!

  11. I comment on blogs because I like the people or I like the post and mostly, like you said, it's like a circle of friends. It's supportive and a way of connecting with others! You guys always inspire me and you have been very kind to me in return, so that keeps me coming back here. I agree with Heather and Rachel up above by the way - another meetup might be due!

  12. Shoot hit publish too soon on my last comment - I had to say how much I love your shirt Megan!! That is another reason I love your blog - you guys are two of the most stylish ladies I know! :)

  13. So I just briefly checked my spam folder and it was...terrifying. But I agree with you, I feel like bloggers are a group of friends I can check in on every day! AND also, that top is really cool.

    ReplyDelete
  14. That shirt is soooo cool. I don't know if I could pull it off. I'm not that cool.
ANYWAY! I love reading blogs that I can relate to and draw inspiration (or a shopping wishlist) from. I comment on the ones that make me smile the most, but I should really start commenting on MORE of them! LOVE YOU LADIES!!

  15. I agree, when you find new bloggers and support each other, it becomes like a circle of friends. I only follow and comment on blogs that I really like. I basically only follow fashion blogs, so if I'm following or commenting it's because I like the style on the blog! I always lover your outfits! That white blouse is gorgeous!

  17. This look is totally adorable. Love the flow of the top, and LOVE the booties.

I totally know what you mean about comments. For me, I comment on posts that I like. Of course, I always make sure I include my blog site, but I try never to spam someone, saying things like, "Hey! Check out my blog! Let's follow each other!" That's just tacky.

I also like to take the time to respond to every comment I receive, as I'm grateful to everyone who takes the time to leave me one. I don't have very many followers (and less who actually leave comments), so I can take advantage of that luxury. :)

    xo,
    Terry

  18. I just found a couple of your comments in my spam too! I don't have many followers so it's always a treat to get comments, I love them!

I try to leave comments when I like something, I won't leave a fake one! It's such a fun way to build friendships with other bloggers out there!

Most of the blogs that I read and comment on include outfits for inspiration and funny stories to help get me through the day! I attempt to do the same :) Clearly yours is right up my alley!

    ReplyDelete
  19. I usually comment if I have something to say, want to be supportive or I really like the outfit. I don't comment as much as I want to because I don't know what to say! I read all of your posts even if I don't always comment :)

    ReplyDelete
  20. you haven't ended up in my spam, don't worry!! i TRY to comment on everything i read - and i read / follow blogs i like - but then sometimes work / life get in the way and i'm not able to comment as often as i like which makes me sad!

    ReplyDelete
  21. I don't always comment because I don't always have something to say. But I love blogs that inspire me to think outside of my traditional style zone and yours definitely does that! Which is, of course, why I keep coming back.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I love your blog because you two are stylish, funny, AND local! I comment on blogs I read a lot, just as a way of saying "Hi, I read your blog ALL THE TIME because I like your style!" I mean, I have a million (ok, not a million but like a thousand) people who stop by my blog every day and I have no idea who most of them are or why they're there or how often they visit. I guess I comment on blogs I like so the blog owners know who I am and that I think they should keep up the good work!

    ReplyDelete
  23. Crap, your comments have been going into my spam! I didn't realize because I get the comments sent to my email and I've been reading them the whole time. Do you know how to fix it (besides me marking it NOT as spam)?

I read and comment on the blogs I love and yours is one of them of course!

  25. I very much appreciate positive and thoughtful comments on my blog. To me, the number of comments doesn't matter. In fact, I get a little discouraged in a blog when I visit and I'm the 112th commenter, I mean, how many of those can they actually read? Do they actually take the time to do a courtesy comment on your blog? Or are you just a number for them? I HATE comments like "great blog! Wanna follow each other?". There's no personal connection there at all! I ONLY comment on posts or blogs that I like their writing, their style/outfit or the person/people who run the blog. Otherwise, it feels really superficial to me and I don't want to be that way. I get a lot of comments that go to spam. I see them in my email, but they don't get posted on the page. I do think I've gotten all or at least most of the comments from you girls and I love that! But I would really appreciate if you could sign your name to them sometimes because I don't know whether I'm thanking Nora or Megan! LOL

  26. ok i'm home alone in my house, & i seriously laughed outloud about the thunder from down, in thongs, being gross & greasy. ;) i read & follow your blog because i like your style & sense of humor. connecting with other people is always my motivation. oh, & your white blouse is beautiful. you are looking very elegant.

  27. First off: I'm stealing yoru shoes (or running to Target to snag a pair for myself!)

Second: I wonder this same thing all the time! We try to write posts that are original, and we don't just "comment to comment" on other peoples' blogs. It's our hope to make real relationships and have real discussions/conversations! But I'm not sure that's everyone's goal...

    ReplyDelete
  28. I found your blog after you left a comment on mine, so I'll be sure to read you guys from now on. Such a lovely blog, and thank you for stopping by mine!

  29. If I like a blog, I like a blog. There has to be an essence of the person (or people in your case) there. I love the fact that you do outfits with random waffle!!! (I am a waffler- I say that in the most affectionate way to you, not meant in any derogatory way!!) Even if they (the blog I like) don't comment back on mine, plus the fact that you KNOW she/they appreciate/s everything you write even if she/they doesn't have the time to comment on everything).

I really like the people I perceive you to be from reading your blog- I imagine you'd be great fun to have as friends in real-life as well as the as well as blog-life and I like what you do here! I wouldn't mind if you didn't comment on my blog, I'd still read because I enjoy what I find here, but it does mean a lot to me that despite the fact you have nigh on 700+ readers, that you STILL take the time to comment on lots of my posts and you don't just utter the sort of platitudes such as 'great blog, or lovely outfit' but you say something personal and thoughtful.

  35. I wish I was brave enough to try leather leggings! Love it. Such an elegant, flowy top too and of course I'm in LOVE with the shoes!
To answer your question, I read your blog because you always have a good story, you both have a great sense of humor and style and I love joining in inspiration mondays! I read a blog because I enjoy the content. It does help if they read back, especially when I get busy and only have time to reply to comments not browse, but that's not what I'm about overall.

  37. I've been getting your comments without any issues, I'm glad to say.

I comment on blogs when I've enjoyed a post and have something to add. Sometimes it's just to say I've read and enjoyed it. I like to comment on the blogs of my followers, because, as you say, after a while it does begin to feel like a circle of friends.

I'm not sure what makes me follow a blog - a nice layout or great pics often tempt me to read but it's the content and the personalities that keep me returning.

I love your blog because it often makes me laugh and, thanks to Inspiration Monday, makes me think about new ways to wear things.

Keep up the great work x

  38. I love your blog because you are cute, smart, funny women with real things to say, real budgets, and you obviously care about people. That's why I follow and comment. I follow and comment on a few others like yours as well. And yes, I check my spam folder every day because that's where I find your comments. Weird!

  39. My likes are all over the place, I come back to this blog because you have a great writing style that really makes me laugh out loud.

I read every single post but not daily. With work, 3 kids, volunteering and just being insane it takes effort! So there are evenings when my husband gives me a cup of tea and sends me to my room with a movie (Footloose -the ORIGINAL)and takes over all the evening activities. On nights like tonight, I read through post after post after post...which now makes me seem like a stalker, but I'm not! At least I don't think so :)
