outfit of the day(bird): the sweet sensations

when i was in the fifth grade, my best friend and i were in a band called "The Sweet Sensations". it wasn't actually a real band, unless you consider two ten-year-olds sitting in one of their bedrooms, writing fifth grade level love songs*, recording them (on cassette tapes...who is old enough to remember those???), and sending those tapes to the local top 40 radio station in hopes that they would play them on air and we would become famous overnight, a band. yep. seriously. i did this. to this day, i often think about the person that received those tapes and what they must have done with them. i imagine a group of twenty and thirty-something radio station employees sitting around and listening to the songs and laughing and laughing. even today, it is slightly embarrassing to think about. silly, naive, ten-year-old me. thank god there wasn't you tube back then. yikes. i can't even imagine!

p.s. this is the outfit i wore last week to a fun blogger happy hour with megan, erin, lori, and daisy. good times!

  5. Oh cassette tapes! Yes!! I had a friend I used to record stuff with too, it's pretty hilarious to go back and listen to our younger selves! We never wrote songs though, just sang along to stuff on the radio.

    LOVE those boots, and the purse too! Sad I had to miss out on that happy hour, hopefully we'll do another one sometime!

  6. My best friend and I used to sit around and write songs too. We certainly weren't on top of our game enough to think of sending them into the radio though! But we would make our own "radio station" by holding our cassette recorder and recording the radio, then adding in our own song, and of course providing amazing 5th grade color commentary. I wish I still had those tapes. . .

  9. omg i never had a band, but i did have a casio keyboard and an imagination. i used to make up girl band names, like horny danish. note: at 9 i didn't know the meaning of "horny."

  10. I used to record my own "radio station" on cassette. So dumb! Thank god Internet technology didn't exist back then, or no doubt I would have shared it widely.

    The Sweet Sensations? Cute. Wasn't there a girl group called Sweet Sensation? I think they opened for NKOTB when they played at the Met Center in 1990.

  16. No, I don't remember doing ANYTHING embarrassing in junior high...or high school... uuhhhhh. I do believe you and I were the coolest freshman at our school....at least we thought so.

  18. Nora I thought that I was going to do commercials, be a model, singer and dancer. I used to do the same thing with the tape recorder. I would read ads from magazines into that thing using my radio voice. Hey, look, at least we're models? Right? More like models off duty but we do get to pose and dress and hopefully influence somebody out there. Hahahha. I love your hair like this. You look sexy and hip. Dawn suitcase vignettes xo

  19. Awwwwwwwww, that's cute! My friend Nicola, her sister and I had our own radio station on cassettes in which we had cringe worthy interviews, singing, interviews etc! So embarassing. I recorded my sister one for her 18th birthday with me singing 'When I'm 64' and pretending I was Jennifer Saunders in an interview with myself!
    Niiiiiiiice, tunic and I really feel I need some boots that colour- I was just thinking it this morning. (Hmmm, honesty check- want, not need!)

  20. This is sooooo cute! I can't carry a tune but my friend and I had coordinated black and white outfits that we made Paula Abdul choreographed dances to! Ohhhh childhood.

    Great tunic, I love the patterns and colors and you have some of the best boots!! I want to raid your shoe closet.
