outfit of the day(bird): bad driver

blazer~ vintage, garage sale
dress~ Gap, thrifted
shoes~ Nine West

my sisters and my dad and my husband (okay, and a lot of people) are always making fun of my driving skills (or shall i say, lack thereof). my mom can't make fun of me because she is a much worse driver than i, although she will deny it (sorry mom, but it's true! and everyone else will back me up here). i am not the world's worst driver, but i always seem to get myself into embarrassing car situations. like the time i was sixteen and only had my learner's permit* and my dad's best friend, ken, was kind and brave enough to let me drive his car. and i proceeded to drive it for miles and miles with the parking break enabled. seriously, on the freeway and everything. going 60mph. and no one noticed until something started to smell funny...and it was the car...because the parking break was on...oops! honestly, though, i blame the car manufacturer. a car should not be able to go while the parking break in enabled, right? (my dad still, to this day, gives me crap about this and it has been almost 17 years).

and do you remember this scene from the movie austin powers?
i have done this more than once. one time when my car slipped between two huge snowbanks at the end of my parent's driveway (i blame the incredibly steep driveway, the horribly slippery minnesota snow and bad tires). and one time, at a family reunion, in an almost completely empty parking lot where it was completely unnecessary for me to even be trying to make a three point turn. no need whatsoever. i had all the room in the world, but i kept reversing and then moving forward and so on and so on. and everyone was watching me and laughing and laughing. humiliating! and they all still talk about it. in this case i also blame the car maker. i was driving a rental (because i had recently been in a car accident...surprised???) and the rear window on that car was seriously tiny. i couldn't see anything! you can't blame me for being careful. i didn't want to run over any of my second-cousins-once-removed that were running around out there! so, see? i am actually not a bad driver. it is always the car's fault!

how's your driving???

i hope you all have a happy friday and a fun weekend!

xoxo, nora bird

*i didn't get my actual driver's license until i was twenty-years-old. i blame this traumatizing experience.

  2. Oh my goodness - that is TOO funny! I hear ya girl, I actually haven't driven in like 3 years - I sold my car when I moved to Boston, and I am TERRIFIED to start driving again, haha. LOVE your dress - so pretty! Hope you have a great weekend :)

  4. Haha! Nora your hair is so pretty. You make me want a pixie cut. No lie. Also- I am a terrible driver. My husband hates when I drive. I have been in multiple accidents and hit a parked car in a parking garage. :)) You are lucky I am not on Minnesota roads!

  5. I'm great on highways and back country roads, but I am really not a city driver. I don't own a car in Boston and every time I take out a zipcar to run an errand I'm a nervous wreck.

PS: love the dress and blazer combo!

  6. Haha! I am a decent driver, but I have horrible road rage, so I'd probably yell at you if I ran into you on the road :D

I have definitely driven with the parking brake on before for a few blocks - seriously, why are cars even able to drive with it engaged?!

I love this dress and blazer, they look adorable together :)

  7. You look so great today! Is it a special occasion?
I'm a pretty good driver and I enjoy it, but I did fail my driver's test when I was 17 for getting a wheel on the curb while I was backing around the corner. My California friends say this is not on their test, which I think is unfair. Shouldn't we have the same test all over the country? So... I didn't get my license until I was 20 either. Happy Friday!

  8. LOL, I'm a pretty decent driver, but I can't parallel park to save my life at this point. I haven't had to do it since my driver's test! So that Austin Powers scene is totally me when it comes to parking in tight spots! Otherwise I'm pretty good with driving, though my night vision kind of stinks so I hate driving at night.

I love this dress and blazer on you pretty Mama!!

  9. i think some people just have bad luck with driving! i can't believe the car didn't beep or anything with the parking break on.

and i LOVE this dress and blazer - so pretty and summery.

  10. Your dress is too cute, love the print! I'm a good drive but a horrible parallel parker. I avoid it whenever possible and of course the few times I do it perfectly, no one is around to witness it. Ha.

  11. My parents wouldn't let me drive in HS so I got my license pretty late too. I think I drive fine, but I'm terrible at parking. Where I live I have to park on the street and since I can't parallel park, sometimes I wind up parking 1/4 mile down the road when the beach is busy. (I make my hubby move my car closer when he gets home, ha). Have a great weekend!

  13. Everyone is lucky that I’m in New York and not behind the wheel. I’m horrible and an anxious driver!

You’ve inspired my latest blog post today:) Thank you!

  14. I didn't get my license until really late too. And my mother trumps everyone for bad driving, looking out the window at everyone's gardens

  15. Oh no! I am a paranoid driver, so maybe we should bump into each other and rub off a little to balance each other out :) I got my license late because my single parent mom didn't have money for classes/insurance...and I totally didn't need it being right in the middle of St. Paul/Mpls...sometimes I still miss MetroTransit :)

  16. I'm not so good at driving either! I once plowed my car into a snow bank because I thought if I went fast enough I would make it threw... So not the case.. hahaha I couldn't even get out of the car I had to be pulled out by one of the snow plows. To make things worse this was in the mall parking lot were I worked. I still haven't lived that down either lol.

  17. Don't get me started on my driving - I've been in too many accidents to count. But most of them haven't been my fault - I'm just unlucky! Loving your dress. You make pregnancy look so chic.:)

  18. This is my favorite look that you have done. You look great. I left my parking break on today. I was at yardsales with the kids...which by the way is SO hard with two..a 6mo old and a four yr old! I went to leave and couldn't figure out what the problem was...duh the break. Let me also say that when I woke up this morning I put nail polish remover on my face instead of astringent. Is it the kids that made me do these things...lol

  19. Nora, I had to read every single comment before I commented, hysterical laughing. People are funny about driving. I am a good driver. Cautious and roadrageous if you piss me off but I mostly just cuss to myself and flick them off once in a while. Anyway, stay off the sidewalks people, Nora is behind the wheel...lol. All jokes aside, you look lovely even if you can't drive....lol. No really, you look super pretty for a bad driver...I mean you are really looking sweet and adorable...truly. dawn xxo

  20. I once hit the gas instead of the brake when I was with my brother and the car jumped a curb, running into a lamp post. We never told my parents that I hit the wrong pedal until probably 10 years later! :)

By the way, I have a cousin who is almost 49 and has never had her license...I'm pretty sure there's a traumatizing story there too!
