curious birds: act your age

how old would you be if you didn't know how old you are?

i'm 37. some tell me i'm young, some think i'm old. i go back and forth. i consider myself a very responsible person. i have a job, a family. i pay the bills on time. i make sure my kids eat their vegetables and get to school every day (and most days they are even wearing matching socks). when my kids wake up in the middle of the night, i am right there with them, holding them, comforting them, waiting for them to fall back asleep. and i still wake up the next day, throw myself together and get to work on time...because i'm a responsible adult.

and some days, i act like a college student. i wear short bright, dresses and sing karaoke and drink beer. i stay up late on saturday nights and eat taco bell at 2 am.

however, those late nights, i am still responsible. i take a cab, drink two large glasses of water before going to bed, and most of those nights, i still think to wash my face and moisturize. because even though i'm acting like i'm 21, i am still 37. (and i know there is no sleeping in the next day.)

the nights of falling asleep at 9 and waking up to a scared kid far outnumber the nights of falling asleep at 2. but that's not to say the 2 am nights never happen. i know my age and i know my responsibilities....but if you were to ask me how old i felt, i would not say 37. i'd probably put myself at a cool 28, sometimes 21, sometimes 50. (those nights where i accidentally fall asleep at 8 watching law & order reruns...law & order is the new perry mason, right?) basically, what i am trying to say is that i feel younger than i am. i might not look younger, or act younger at all times, but i definitely feel younger, and i consider that a good thing.

so...if you didn't know your age, how old would you think you are?

if you missed the giveaway yesterday, there is still time to enter! we will be drawing a winner next wednesday!!

happy thursday (it's my friday!!)

  1. I would be 15 or 25 - the former on the days when I go back to being a kid and 25, when I realise that I'm married, living abroad and managing a household of two :D

Love your dress and tights :)

  2. Haha love this post. And your outfit...SO so cute. I still feel like I'm 17 or 18 (I'm 27) because I still don't know what I would do without my mom :)

  3. I feel the same way - I'm 26... sometimes I act 55 and sometimes I act 19. It depends on my mood, I guess.

And ummm you had my heart at "Taco Bell at 2am"... that's where I can almost always be found on Saturday night. One time I made our cab driver take us there before dropping us off and I told him he could order whatever he wanted. That fool ordered almost $15 worth of crap.

  4. I'm 37 too and I have a 16 year old son. Most days I feel between 25-30. I read this crazy blog the other day that was trying to give tips for for to dress over 50, and it said 50 year old women should not wear mini-skirts. I was a total aghast! I plan on wearing mini-skirts and short shorts for a long time into my 70's.

  5. This is hands down one of my absolute FAVORITE outfits on you. I love the sweetness of the dress with the killer polka dot tights and the shoes, oh I love those shoes!

I agree with you on the age thing. I have to say my 20's were a rough patch so I actually LOVE my 30's. My 30's are my equivalent of what my 20's should have been with the highlight of being able to afford everything my heart could desire, for the most part. Making money is a super bonus for a much more enjoyable life. While I can't go out and drink like a fool anymore since O and A need me to be some what coherent. They are a nice reminder of why hangovers are not all that much fun. You can still find me in the club gettin tipsy ever once in a while though:)

  6. You are only as old as you feel, and like you, I don't act my age. I'm 31, still love Hello Kitty, wear babydoll dresses... yet, I work and have my "adult" responsibilities. I feel like I'm still in my 20s and in some ways, have a lot more younger tendencies. But I say, wear whatever you want as long as you feel good in it, and can get away with it! You look fab - keep on being you!

  7. what a fabulous dress! you look so pretty.

i feel about 26-28 most days. even younger on others and about 47 or 50 every now and then. my mother-in-law is 77 and this is the first year she's ever said she feels close to her age.

  8. This is an interesting concept. I think I would be about 35... yea that seems right. But I guess sometimes my clothing throws that off. THIS dress is wonderful! I will officially be looking for one every time I go to TJmax, although I'm sadly sure I'll never find it. It looks wonderful on you!

  9. I will be 45 in May but I feel 35. I would feel younger but I worked daytime hours the last 2 days. I had forgotten how tough it can be to work day hours...ugh. Megan this was a great read and so beautifully written. I really love your writing style and Nora's too. Sometimes I can't tell who is writing but I love both. NOW, about that outfit. FANTASTIC, young, sexy, vibrant, current, age appropriate, fresh and inspirational. You look beautiful. Have a great day...I need to catch up on your posts. Dawn Suitcase Vignettes xo

  10. Weirdly, I felt older in my late teens than I do now. I'm all too aware of how big and scary and intimidating the world is for lil' old me. I tend to flip between 40 and 16 a lot, I think.

  11. What a sweet dress! I agree with you, mostly I'm pretty responsible and grown up, but definitely still let loose my inner 21 year old sometimes. I'm 30 but I guess I feel like 26? most of the time.

  12. you look great and that dress is so cute! That's such an interesting question at the end. I think I'm the opposite of you. I feel a lot older than I actually am but I love it! :) great post

  13. I'm 22 but I feel older sometimes like around 26-28 and then I force myself down to 12 to feel better. :p

  16. Those shoes. Those SHOES. I adore them. They are so cute with your fun dress!

I feel like I'm 27. Although I was really lost in my 20s and my 30s have been amazing.

I laughed at the 2 glasses of water before bedtime after a late night. I add 2 fish oil pills and a banana. I swear by it. :)

  17. Well, up until 2 years ago I still got carded at R rated movies and there is always a long awkward inspection of my ID whenever I buy me some boozies but just because I look under 21, I certainly don't feel like it. Yeah, I go out and get a little cray cray sometimes but man, if I still acted like I did when I was 18-21-phew...pretty sure I'd be unemployed! The only time I really think about my age (which is 26), especially in relation to how I present myself is thinking about the point at which I am "supposed to" start dressing like an old lady. I fear this day beyond all reason. And I'm hoping I don't fully embrace that day until at least 50! Maybe at like 45 I'll transition out my babydoll dresses? Oh and PS I LOOOOOOVE your dress and it looks AMAZING on you and FYI this whole time I've totally thought you were in your late twenties-you look awesome! Xo Lori

  20. Those tights are soooo cute!!!

I'm not a mom yet, and I just turned 30, but I mostly feel like that is about right. I definitely have moments where I feel closer to 21 still, and more moments than I'd like to admit that I feel closer to my parents age, but for the most part I think I'm pretty balanced! Age is just a number really! :)

  21. What a wonderful outfit, I've been hunting for similar tights forever! I'm with Bethie, just turned 30 and feel about right. Some nights 9am and a good book is all I can handle and other nights its 3am at the diner with friends. Age is a number and not a feeling!

  24. This outfit is so so adorable! I love your floral heels with the polka dot tights. It's a very cute combination. I quite enjoyed this post. I have no idea how old I would think I am if I didn't know. Probably younger because I look quite young? Who knows!

  25. I had this major meltdown moment this past year when I thought I might get to old to dress in the quirky way I do. Then I decided that I will just be that crazy lady because I AM that crazy lady and I will embrace my style and flair. I would say I feel somewhere between 23 and 25 (really 37, BTW) and more than happy to keep folks bewildered by my choices. :)

  27. I'm 33 - but I never feel that old. I may have 3 kids and a responsible lifestyle, but I'm constantly surprised to find that people on sitcoms or sports figures are younger than me (I always forget how old I am!). Hopefully I stay young at heart forever:)

LOVE that pink dress - and those tights!!

  29. what a cute dress, the color is amazing. I love fuchsia. Looks great with the patterned stocking and floral shoes. One of my favorite outfits of yours. It's nice to be able to feel 21 sometimes. I do late nights too, but I;m feeling more and more sluggish as I grow older. Sound like you're still full of energy, do it while you can. I still see fabulous women partying away at the pubs at 50. Kudos to them!

  31. I'm 31 and I have felt to be stuck in the age of 23 for a while now...which I consider a good thing.

I most definitely would have guessed you were around 25:) It really is about state of mind I do agree. You look absolutely gorgeous in your bright pink dress...which I am loving. That Peter Pan collar is simply the sweetest! Have a loverly weekend! xx Marisa
